Ninety-Nine Nights is an action-adventure video game made by Q Entertainment and Phantagram. It was released only for the Xbox 360 console and published by Microsoft. The game places you in the shoes of a warrior. This warrior must wade through wave after wave of enemies, aided by guard units who will attack along with the warrior or defend him/her, depending on what commands the player gives them. Who this warrior is varries according to how far along you are in the game. In the beginning, you must play as the female warrior Inphyy, but as you progress through the game, more characters become available.
Often compared to games like Dynasty Warriors, Ninety-Nine Nights is an amazing video game experience with gorgeous graphics (both in-game and in the FMV sequences), haunting music, and incredibly fun gameplay. The story is involving and the fact that you can experience alternate versions of the story by using different characters keeps everything fresh.
N3 has provoked very different responses from the people who have played it. Some magazines gave it poor reviews, while others gave it extremely high scores. Some players despise it, while others adore it. Obviously, I fall into the adoring crowd.
I've seen countless people on message boards asking "Is this game any good?" I always reply with "I personally like it, so yes." I certainly understand how many people wouldn't enjoy this game. Most of their complaints about it are valid. For instance, the missions in the game have no save points or check points. If you die at the end of the mission, you have to repeat it from the beginning. The voice acting is tolerable at best and horrific at worst. And mowing through hordes of enemies over and over again can get tedious.
However, I think the game's good points more than make up for the bad. The graphics are stunningly gorgeous and the character designs are inspiring. The music is haunting and lovely. The combos are appropriately huge and powerful, often clearing out hundreds of enemies at a time. And each of the seven playable characters have their own fighting style, so even if you're on the same level that you already played as another character, it still feels fresh and different.
The characters themselves are unique individuals with personalities that shine through the chaos of the battles. The story is fascinating, and while I think it was a bit rushed, it was still very satisfying to me. The best part is that you get to see it from very different perspectives, from both sides of the conflict. There is no flat out good or evil side in this war, and the game forces you to put a little thought into what's going on, via emotional and sometimes disturbing cut scenes.
N3 is an excellent game. Anyone who plays it all the way through and truly takes in the story will find something special.
