Mortal Kombat began life as a rather violent and controversial video game series. Its popularity eventually resulted in a live-action film adaption released in 1995 and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson (who would go on to direct the Resident Evil film). In the eyes of many, this was the first video game adaption that was successful.

The MK video games, brilliant as they were, were somewhat lacking in plot and character development. The film somehow managed to take the meager backstory of the games and make a solid, entertaining story. It also fleshed out several of the characters (Rayden and Johnny Cage in particular) transforming them into interesting people you could root for.

The movie had amazing sets and locations that masterfully recreated some of the arenas in the game, as well as surprisingly realistic effects. Of particular interest was the soundtrack which went platinum in ten days. I personally have worn out two copies of the soundtrack. The music fit into the themes of the movie perfectly and really captured the exciting and exotic nature of the story.

This movie proved to me that video games could become good movies, if handled correctly. It satsified me as a fan of the video games and as a fan of movies in general. I went to see it twice in the theaters, something I never do, because I just couldn't get enough. It was at times funny, suspenseful, sad, and almost always thrilling. It may not be the most dramatic, deep movie you'll see. But it's entertaining the whole way through and interesting even after multiple viewings.

Whenever someone tells me that video game adaptions are all doomed to suck, I quickly point to Mortal Kombat. If you think it sucks too, well, I question your taste.
