Who She Is: Miho is an only child from an incredibly wealthy family. She is sent to Cheju Island by her father to take on a teaching job (initially, for the purpose of broadening her horizons, but it’s later revealed that he had other reasons for sending here there, such as getting her to entertain his business partners while they were there). She is picked up at the airport by a young man who claims to work for her father, and seems to be expecting her. On the way to a hotel, the car breaks down in a secluded area, and the driver rushes off to get help, leaving Miho behind. Miho manages a peek into the trunk, only to find the dead, mutilated body of a human woman. The driver returns and reveals himself as a grotesque demon who intends to rape and eat Miho. Just as her fate seems sealed, a mysterious man appears to make short work of the demon, apparently possessing amazing powers and a grudge against the demon itself. The man (Pan) decides to leave no witnesses, and goes to kill Miho, but after she takes a casual approach to death and surprisingly accepts her fate, Pan changes his mind. He lets her live, but informs her that demons from all over the island would now be coming for her, and she’d probably be dead by morning. Miho has an idea though, and eventually convinces Pan to work for her, slaying demons and protecting her, in exchange for huge sums of money. Thus the story of a rich young woman and her demon-slaying body guard begins.
Appearance: Miho is a very glamorous, beautiful woman. She could easily be a model, especially with all the designer clothes she wears. Her hair is long, straight, and exotic. Her eyes are dark and sultry. Rarely does a male character appear that can completely ignore her beauty. The Burning Desire demons (demons who pick targets depending on sexual desire) from all over Cheju, and even from other islands, all want her.
Skills: Miho is a very artistically-inclined person. Her major in college was art, and she’s seen painting (her painting was very good) in the series. She’s also very knowledgeable of various famous fashion designers, recognizing even the tiniest element of design on specific pieces. She can handle tough old business men (another character comments that she has them eating out of her hand in mere minutes) and manages to slip out of trouble on most occasions.
Personality: Though Miho is very rich and spoiled (materialistically speaking that is), she is not the usual miss priss we see falling into that category. She is extremely intelligent, so much so that I’d be willing to bet she was close to genius. She has a knack for figuring things (as well as people) out. She comes up with a lot of excellent plans and strategies during the story, and manages to think things through even when she’s in a dire situation. For example, after she was initially attacked by the first demon, and narrowly escaped from Pan, you’d think she would be too shocked and horrified to come up with something so brilliant as to hire Pan to kill demons for her. And it wasn’t just on this occasion. Several times does she react quickly and wisely to danger in order to save herself or her friends.
Another of Miho’s traits is her ability to manipulate people. While this may seem negative, it most often works to the benefit of good. She more or less manipulates Pan into becoming her bodyguard. She manipulates John into coming to Cheju Island (with the purpose of saving a possessed little girl). She manipulates Kojima into letting her in on the skull investigation (thus leading her to discover the truth). Miho has a talent for getting what she wants from people, any way she has to get it. We’re just lucky that she has such good intentions, or she’d make a very powerful villain.
Speaking of good intentions, Miho’s motives need to be discussed. In the beginning, Miho wanted to save herself. She started out with an almost selfish mission: to keep herself from being killed. But it doesn’t take long for her to get wrapped up in the lives of her students (whom she initially hated). First, there was the young girl who made a contract with Penjulae. Miho’s instincts probably told her to avoid the danger, but Miho’s heart probably told her to try to help the poor girl. So Miho convinced Pan (with effort) to go with her to the girl’s house in an attempt to save her. Though things didn’t work out, this story illustrated the fact that Miho can be kind-hearted and selfless, albeit begrudgingly. Next was another student’s little sister, who had been possessed by an obsession spirit. Miho claims to hate kids, but she immediately asks Pan for help. When that doesn’t work out, she goes to great lengths to bring John to Cheju to save the little girl (which he does).
Miho is a kind person. She sometimes acts indifferent or crude, but she can’t turn away anyone who desperately needs help. She even seems to have forgiven Kojima, the man who nearly beat her to death and tried to rape her. In fact, the only person she seems to hold a grudge against is her father. The man only appears very briefly, via a phone conversation with Miho. In that short time, their relationship becomes clear. Miho’s father is a wealthy business man, and probably never had much time for Miho. Since he probably wasn’t around her all that much, he doesn’t understand his own daughter. Because of that, he still views her as a child, and refuses to take her seriously. He only calls Miho when he needs her for something, and while Miho sighs and takes the “I knew it” approach, she seems to be hurt by it as well.
Perhaps it is because of these issues with her father that Miho seems to have a distrust in men. Though Miho’s age is never told, it’s assumed that she’s somewhere between 18 and 24 (she’s a teacher, so she apparently went to college, though it’s stated that she graduated at an early age). But, she is still a virgin. With her looks, she could probably have any man she wanted. At her age, wouldn’t you think she would have slept with someone by now? Seeing as how she hasn’t, one can assume that she doesn’t exactly trust men. But why is that? Is it because of her relationship with her father, or some other incident entirely? And where is her mother? As far as I can remember from the English version, Miho’s mother was never once mentioned. Did she grow up without a female role model?
In the end, I think Miho is a very wise, good-natured person. One who has been drawn into tragedy and violence too many times. But with such a steady mind and calm, cool countenance, I believe she will eventually move past this slew of bad times and get on with her life.
