The song Itooshii Hito no Tame ni (title translates to "For the Sake of My Beloved") is the opening theme song for the anime series Fushigi Yuugi. It was performed by Satou Akemi. It plays throughout all fifty-two episodes of the anime series.

I have always regarded this song as my all-time favorite opening theme. Aside from being a gorgeous song, it does an incredible job of capturing the mood and feel of the series. Hearing it builds up excitement for the coming episode, and it's one of the very few opening themes that I never fast-forwarded through.

The music is amazing, starting out slow and then speeding up to emulate the adventurous spirit of the series. Fushigi Yuugi is an epic, and this song does it justice. The lyrics are equally lovely, perfectly describing the themes of love, friendship, and adventure that drive the story.

How great is this theme? The person who introduced me to Fushigi Yuugi over eight years ago wrote a five paragraph e-mail to me just to describe this song and how beautifully it relates to the series.

Here are the translated lyrics of the song, taken from animelyrics.com:

Fly high! Suzaku miracle Lah...
The legend is beginning to unfold
The real me unfurls
(Distant echoes of "Wo ai ni")
...lead me to you
(Awakening spirits...)
...begin to shine to another world

For the sake of my beloved
Now what can I do?
There aren't any dreams that won't come true!
I truly believe

I'm absorbed in the breath-taking adventure
That lies between Heaven and Earth
(Smile and say "Hello")
Watched over and protected by you
(Love is the shining constellations)
I remember another miracle

A once in a lifetime encounter
Please engrave it on your soul
Because I think that love will
Always be our salvation

For the sake of my beloved
Now what can I do?
There aren't any dreams that won't come true!
I truly believe

(Open to infinity... Fushigi Yuugi)
